Dentistry is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, medical and surgical therapies of diseases affecting teeth, gums, jaw bones (upper and lower jaw or mandible), temporomandibular joints (TMJ), salivary glands, neuro-muscular tissues and oral mucosa. All the parts described above are often synthetically referred to “stomatognatic apparatus” (stoma, stomatos stands for “mouth” and gnatos for “jaw”).
